First-time Bhutan
Day 1 - Arrival into Paro
- The approach into Paro — a banking descent between Himalayan ridgelines onto Bhutan's only international runway.
- Met by your Farbound tour director and licensed Bhutanese guide; private transfer to your hotel.
- Easy first walk along the Paro Chhu or to Rinpung Dzong's exterior as the valley light goes.
- Welcome dinner at the hotel.
Day 2 - Paro to Thimphu
- Drive Paro to Thimphu, about an hour.
- The Buddha Dordenma above the valley, and the National Memorial Chorten circled by pilgrims.
- Tashichho Dzong in the late afternoon when it opens.
- The weekend market if your dates align; evening at leisure.
Day 3 - Thimphu to Punakha over Dochula Pass
- Cross Dochula Pass (3,100m) — on a clear morning the chortens stand against the full Himalayan arc.
- Descend to the warmer Punakha valley.
- Punakha Dzong at the river confluence, reached across the suspension footbridge.
- Riverside time as the afternoon softens.
Day 4 - Punakha valley
- Walk through terraced rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple of the Divine Madman.
- Optional 45-minute climb to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten for the valley view.
- Flexible afternoon — river, village, or rest.
Day 5 - Punakha to Paro
- Return drive over Dochula Pass to Paro.
- Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples, in its walled courtyard of prayer wheels.
- The National Museum above the dzong for mask and thangka context.
- Afternoon at leisure; early night before the Tiger's Nest morning.
Day 6 - Tiger's Nest (Taktsang Monastery)
- Early start (gate opens 8am). The trail gains roughly 520m from the trailhead; the monastery perches 900m above the valley.
- Horse to the halfway cafeteria available; turning back there still gives the full view of Taktsang across the gorge.
- Inside: cave shrines and butter lamps before the descent.
- Afternoon to rest.
Day 7 - Departure from Paro
- A slow breakfast.
- Private transfer to Paro Airport, timed to your flight.
