Seven days through Bhutan’s western valleys, planned at Signature level. The route stays focused: Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and the climb to Taktsang Monastery, better known as Tiger’s Nest. This is the right first Bhutan journey for travellers who want the classic western circuit handled with stronger hotels, smoother pacing, senior trip leadership, and less friction on the ground. Short drives, unhurried mornings, and flexible valley time keep the journey from becoming a checklist. You travel with a senior Farbound trip lead alongside a licensed Bhutanese guide, with stays planned at properties such as COMO Uma, Six Senses, Amankora, or similar. Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee, visa handling, monument entries, private transport, and most meals are built into the plan.

Day 1 - Arrival into Paro
- The approach into Paro is one of the most dramatic airport arrivals in the Himalaya, with the aircraft descending between ridgelines into Bhutan’s only international runway.
- On arrival, you are met by your senior Farbound trip lead and licensed Bhutanese guide, then transferred privately to your lodge.
- The day is kept deliberately light. Settle in, review the route ahead, and take an easy walk along the Paro Chhu or near Rinpung Dzong if the timing feels right.
Day 2 - Paro to Thimphu
- Drive from Paro to Thimphu, following the river through the western valleys.
- Begin with Buddha Dordenma, the large seated Buddha above the capital, before continuing to the National Memorial Chorten, where local residents circle through the day with prayer wheels.
- In the late afternoon, visit Tashichho Dzong, the fortress-monastery that remains central to Bhutan’s religious and administrative life.
- If your dates align, add time at the weekend market for produce, chillies, textiles, and everyday Thimphu life.
- Dinner is at a chosen Thimphu table.
Day 3 - Thimphu to Punakha over Dochula Pass
- Leave Thimphu after breakfast and climb towards Dochula Pass, where 108 chortens sit against the high Himalayan range on clear days.
- From the pass, descend through forest into the warmer Punakha valley.
- Visit Punakha Dzong, set at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers. Its scale, setting, and courtyards make it one of the strongest architectural moments of the journey.
- There is time around the river and suspension bridge before settling into the lodge.
Day 4 - Punakha valley
- Keep the day in Punakha, with time to experience the valley at a slower pace.
- Walk through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, associated with Drukpa Kunley, the Divine Madman, and still visited by Bhutanese families.
- For travellers who want a little more activity, continue with the climb to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, with views across the Mo Chhu and surrounding fields.
- Lunch is planned with a valley outlook. The afternoon is left flexible for the lodge, river, spa, or a quiet village walk.
Day 5 - Punakha to Paro
- Drive back west towards Paro, crossing Dochula Pass again and returning to the valley where the journey began.
- Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, set within a quiet walled courtyard.
- Continue to the National Museum above Rinpung Dzong for context on Bhutanese art, masks, thangkas, natural history, and sacred geography.
- The afternoon is left easy ahead of the Tiger’s Nest hike the next morning.
Day 6 - Tiger’s Nest, Taktsang Monastery
- Start early for Taktsang Monastery, better known as Tiger’s Nest.
- The trail climbs through pine forest, prayer flags, and open viewpoints before reaching the classic view across the gorge to the monastery.
- Travellers can choose to walk at their own pace. A horse can be arranged up to the halfway cafeteria if preferred, though the final section must be done on foot.
- Inside the monastery, visit the cave shrines and quiet interiors linked to Guru Rinpoche.
- Return to the lodge in the afternoon. An optional hot stone bath can be arranged after the descent.
- Farewell dinner in Paro.
Day 7 - Departure from Paro
- The final morning is kept simple.
- After breakfast, transfer privately to Paro Airport, timed to your onward flight. Your Farbound lead and local team coordinate the departure handling.
