Maharajas' Express, Palace on Wheels and a private India journey can cover much of the same geography. They do not deliver the same trip.

A luxury train turns the accommodation into the transport and fixes the route around published departure dates. A private journey changes hotels but gives you control over pace, room choice, sightseeing time and the places that deserve an extra night.

The useful question is not which option is more luxurious. It is whether the train itself is one of the reasons you want to travel.

The short answer

Choose Maharajas' Express when the highest-spec rail experience is central to the holiday and one of its published itineraries already matches the places you want.

Choose Palace on Wheels when you want a classic Rajasthan-focused week by rail and are comfortable with a fixed sequence through Jaipur, Ranthambore, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur and Agra.

Choose a private journey when hotel choice, slower stays, privacy and the ability to change each day matter more than sleeping on the train.

For some travellers the strongest answer is a hybrid: use the train for one chapter, then continue privately.

Maharajas' Express: four current itineraries for 2026-27

For the 2026-27 season, Maharajas' Express is publishing four journeys. The Indian Splendour, The Heritage of India and The Indian Panorama each run for six nights and seven days. Treasures of India runs for three nights and four days.

The routes are not interchangeable. The Indian Splendour runs from Delhi through Agra, Ranthambore, Jaipur, Bikaner, Jodhpur and Udaipur before ending in Mumbai. The Heritage of India runs the broad reverse direction from Mumbai through Rajasthan and Agra to Delhi. The Indian Panorama adds Orchha, Khajuraho and Varanasi to a North India rail journey. Treasures of India is the shorter Delhi, Agra, Ranthambore and Jaipur option.

That variety is the main advantage Maharajas' Express has over a single fixed rail circuit. You can choose the rail journey that already comes closest to the wider India trip you want.

What Maharajas' Express currently costs

The official 2026-27 tariff puts the six-night Deluxe Cabin at USD 8,400 per person for The Indian Splendour and The Indian Panorama, and USD 8,800 for The Heritage of India, based on the published adult twin-sharing journey rate.

Treasures of India starts at USD 5,300 per person in a Deluxe Cabin for the three-night journey. Higher categories rise through Junior Suite and Suite to the Presidential Suite, which is published at USD 26,800 for the six-night journeys.

Taxes and current booking terms need to be checked at the time of confirmation. The operator also states that itineraries, venues and departures can change.

Those numbers matter because they place Maharajas' Express in the same broad budget conversation as a high-end private India week. The question is therefore where you want that budget to sit: on the train and its included operating structure, or across individual hotels, guides and vehicles.

Palace on Wheels: a fixed seven-night Rajasthan circuit

Palace on Wheels currently operates a seven-night, eight-day route beginning and ending at New Delhi's Safdarjung station.

The official sequence is New Delhi, Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur, Agra and back to New Delhi. The itinerary includes Ranthambore, Rajasthan's major palace cities and the Taj Mahal within one continuous rail journey.

This is the cleanest luxury-train choice for travellers who want a concentrated Rajasthan overview and like the idea of unpacking once.

It is also the least flexible of the three formats being compared. You accept the train's city order, excursion timing and one-night rhythm in exchange for the continuity of the rail journey.

What Palace on Wheels currently costs

For October 2026 through March 2027, the official Palace on Wheels tariff lists a double-occupancy Deluxe Cabin at USD 976 per person per night. Across seven nights, that is USD 6,832 per person before applying the operator's current taxes and terms.

For September 2026 and April 2027, the same category is published at USD 864 per person per night. Higher categories include single-occupancy Deluxe, Super Deluxe, Suite and Presidential Suite cabins.

This makes Palace on Wheels less expensive at entry level than a six-night Maharajas' Express Deluxe Cabin, but price alone does not make the products equivalent. The routes, cabin styles, excursion structure and onboard experience are different.

The biggest practical advantage of both trains: unpack once

Repeated hotel changes create friction. Luxury rail removes most of it.

Your room moves with you, meals are organised within the product and the major transfers between destinations happen while the train is travelling. For guests who dislike packing, checking in and coordinating road days, that continuity is a real advantage.

The trade-off is cabin space. Even a high-end cabin is a different physical experience from a large palace-hotel room or suite, and storage can matter for travellers carrying several large cases, formal clothing or camera equipment.

The biggest limitation: the day belongs partly to the timetable

A train has to leave on time. That changes how sightseeing works.

Excursions are built around the operating timetable of the train and the needs of many guests. You can choose the journey, but you cannot usually decide that Jaipur deserves another afternoon, that you want to leave Amber Fort at first light, or that Udaipur should become a three-night stay.

For some travellers that structure is relaxing. There is less daily decision-making. For photographers, families, repeat visitors and travellers who care deeply about pace, it can be the main compromise.

What a private journey does differently

A private journey keeps the geography but removes the fixed rail rhythm.

Jaipur can be three nights instead of one excursion day. Udaipur can be slowed down around a palace hotel. Ranthambore can receive three safari drives instead of one scheduled visit. Agra can use a Taj-view room and a deliberately timed monument visit rather than fitting the city around a departure.

The trade-off is that your hotel changes with the city. Bags move, road sectors need to be planned and the operating structure has more moving parts.

When done well, that extra complexity is invisible to the traveller. What remains is control over the day.

Hotels are where private travel can pull away

India's hotel range is one of the strongest reasons to choose a private journey.

A single route can use Rambagh Palace or The Oberoi Rajvilas in Jaipur, Umaid Bhawan or an old-city heritage property in Jodhpur, Taj Lake Palace or The Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur, and a tented wildlife lodge at Ranthambore.

The hotel can therefore change character with the destination.

On a luxury train, the cabin is the constant. That consistency is the point. On a private trip, variation is the point.

Guiding and sightseeing feel different too

Train excursions are organised inside a published programme. They remove planning effort and give the journey a clear structure.

Private travel lets the guide adjust to the traveller. A history-focused guest can spend longer at a fort. A family can leave later. A photographer can protect light. A repeat visitor can skip the headline monument and spend the afternoon with an artisan or specialist instead.

Neither format is automatically better. The question is how much control you want to retain.

Who gets the most value from a luxury train?

The train is especially strong for travellers who enjoy rail, dislike hotel changes and want the journey itself to be one of the major experiences of the trip.

It also works well for guests who prefer a fixed programme over daily decisions and who are comfortable sightseeing within the train's operating schedule.

For a first visit, the shorter Treasures of India can be an efficient way to combine Delhi, Agra, Ranthambore and Jaipur without committing the whole holiday to rail.

Who gets the most value from a private journey?

Private travel becomes more valuable as the traveller's needs become more specific.

Families with different energy levels, multigenerational groups, travellers with mobility considerations, photographers, couples who care deeply about hotels and repeat visitors all benefit from being able to alter the rhythm.

It also makes more sense when the trip extends beyond the train's route into Kerala, the Himalayas, Central India wildlife, Varanasi or smaller Rajasthan stops.

Can you combine the train with a private journey?

Yes, and this is often the most interesting answer.

A traveller can use Treasures of India for the Golden Triangle and Ranthambore, then continue privately to Udaipur or Varanasi. A longer Maharajas' Express route can be preceded by a slower Delhi arrival or followed by several nights in Mumbai, Kerala or a wildlife lodge.

Palace on Wheels can be treated as the Rajasthan chapter inside a longer India journey rather than being asked to carry the entire holiday.

This gives you the continuity of rail without giving up flexibility everywhere else.

How should you compare the price properly?

Do not compare a published train tariff only with hotel room rates.

A luxury-train fare usually includes accommodation, most meals, the programmed off-train excursions and transport associated with the itinerary. A private journey quote may include hotels, private vehicle, licensed guides, monument arrangements, airport handling, domestic flights and an operating layer around the trip.

The correct comparison is the full journey cost for the same dates, cabin or room quality, guiding level and geography.

Our Luxury Golden Triangle guide explains why two trips through the same cities can differ significantly even before a train is added.

The transport question inside a private itinerary

A private journey does not mean driving everywhere.

On routes where flying saves most of a usable day, fly. On coherent Rajasthan sectors, drive. Use the train when the live timetable improves the route rather than because rail is assumed to be more authentic.

Our Train, Flight or Private Car guide sets out that wider decision logic.

This flexibility is one of the main differences from a luxury-train holiday, where rail is the organising principle.

Which one would we choose?

If the traveller says, 'I have always wanted to cross India on a luxury train,' we would begin with the train and choose the itinerary that best matches the rest of the trip.

If the traveller says, 'I want the best version of Rajasthan, Agra and the Golden Triangle,' we would usually compare the train with a private route before deciding.

Maharajas' Express gives you more itinerary choice and a very high-end rail product. Palace on Wheels gives you a concentrated Rajasthan circuit with a long operating history. A private journey gives you the strongest control over hotels, pace and the shape of each day.

The best answer depends on whether the rail journey is the destination or the means of seeing the destinations.
